Six Months of Belletristđź’«
I’ve been craving change this year and really enjoyed reading along with Belletrist’s monthly book club picks. The titles selected were unique and covered a variety of genres, styles, and subjects, which was refreshing.
Scroll down to view the full list with mini reviews/reactions; I’m looking forward to the next six months of picks to see what new gems I discover!
- January: Lost Lambs by Madeline Cash
A wacky, offbeat, darkly funny, family-centric story that kept me on my toes and turning pages; a unique novel and a wonderful change of pace
- February: Strangers by Belle Burden
A phenomenal memoir that chronicles a shocking, sudden marital detonation during the 2020 pandemic; truly nightmarish, superbly written, and completely riveting from start to finish
- March: The Valley of Vengeful Ghosts by Kim Fu
A disturbing, anxiety-inducing tale of a warped mother-daughter relationship, the perils of adulthood, and the ghosts of childhood, grief, and regret; dark, depressing, intense, heavy, and unrelenting
- April: The Fountain by Casey Scieszka
A fantastical story of an immortal woman who returns home in search of answers (i.e., the cause of her condition); this one had great potential and started off well, but wound up dragging and didn’t quite come together
- May: Almost Life by Kiran Millwood Hargrave
A decade-spanning story of love, longing, aging, mortality, roads not taken, and the pain of missing out; a reflection on life’s messy, complicated, and difficult nature; engrossing, uncomfortable, and, at times, difficult and depressing
- June: Hunger and Thirst by Claire Fuller
A haunting story of loneliness, loss, friendship, and horror amid personal upheaval and past tragedy; a highly anticipated read with fantastic gothic elements that I didn’t quite connect with as much as I’d hoped, but nonetheless really appreciated
Do you read along with any book clubs, and, if so, what was your favorite title for the first six months of the year? Mine was Strangers by Belle Burden.
