Meet Me in Books💀
🖤A Childhood Favorite: Horror Hotel! by Hilary Milton
One of the first books I read that was hugely gothic and ended very unhappily depending on which adventure I chose, and I was hooked!
🖤A Life-Altering Favorite: The Serpent King by Jeff Zentner
This book found me when I needed it and spoke to me in a way few others have. I treasure it and read it every year, and it always makes me laugh, cry, and feel like I’m going home.
🖤A Recent Favorite: My Darling Dreadful Thing by Johanna van Veen
My favorite 2024 read, this is a magnificent, grisly gothic centered around trauma, mystery/doubt, and female rage.
🖤An All-Time Favorite: The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield
I’ve read this gothic page-turner three times, and it only gets better. It's a twisted, intricate tale loaded with dangerous family secrets and the perfect balance of dark and light.
🖤A Favorite Classic: The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett
I read this when I need something funny, life-affirming, heartening, wholesome, and inspiring (while still satisfying my gothic craving, of course!).
🖤A Favorite Doorstopper: Blackwater by Michael McDowell
I sunk into this character-driven, generation-spanning, paranormal-infused southern gothic saga and could have easily read another 800 pages. Atmospheric, quiet, and horrifying, it’s in a class by itself.
🖤A Favorite Humor/Horror Melding: The Pale Blue Eye by Louis Bayard
I’m endlessly fascinated by Edgar Allan Poe, and this spellbinding gothic mystery features him as a young West Point cadet. It’s heartrending, hilarious, gruesome, and breathtaking.
🖤A Favorite Jaw-Dropper: Ghost Eaters by Clay McLeod Chapman
This book is dark and epic, ghostly and gothic, understated and blazing, emphatic and brilliant, and it blew my mind!
🖤A Favorite Quest: The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova
This quest for truth begins with an ancient book and a letter cache and winds through olden libraries, monasteries, crypts, and archives. Immersive and completely addictive.
🖤A Perfect Book: Gallant by V.E. Schwab
A macabre and masterful work of art where each word feels purposeful and every line impeccable. A luminous slice of gothic perfection.
How about you?
🖤Amanda
