Five Anticipated Backlist Titles💀

  • In the Lonely Hours by Shannon Morgan (2024), a ghost story set on a remote Scottish isle that involves a bequeathed castle; numerous ghosts; a blood-filled Lake of Shadows; a missing, priceless diamond; and a host of dark legends, curses, tragedies, and mysteries that culminate on Samhain (Scottish Halloween). Can’t wait to dig into this one!

  • Our Hideous Progeny by C. E. McGill (2023), “a fresh, queer, provocative” Frankenstein retelling described as “a sumptuous tale of ambition and obsession, of forbidden love and sabotage; an adventure story that blends classic, immersive storytelling with contemporary themes.” I will (almost) never say no to a Frankenstein retelling, and I’m especially intrigued by the dinosaur aspect of this one!

  • The Shape of Darkness by Laura Purcell (2021), a Victorian gothic murder mystery set in Bath involving a silhouette artist and spirit medium who irreversibly open a supernatural door as they attempt to discover the killer. Everything about this sounds incredible!

  • The Coffin Path by Katherine Clements (2018), a 17th-century ghost story surrounding Scarcross Hall, a house situated on the coffin path stretching from village to wild Yorkshire moors. Rumored to contain evil, it’s where Mercy Booth resides, and where she experiences disturbing events and takes in a stranger with the power to upend her life. Every part of this sounds eerie and compelling!

  • The Family Plot by Cherie Priest (2016), a Tennessee-based haunted house tale that follows a salvage crew as they attempt to strip Withrow mansion, a condemned property that’s empty but far from abandoned and teeming with supernatural surprises and sinister secrets. Described as “atmospheric, scary, and strange with a modern gothic sensibility every bit as fresh as it is frightening,” this one sounds right up my alley!
