Of the many incredible things my local library offers, one of my favorites is Hoopla, a digital streaming service that allows cardholders free access to a variety of content. My library allows up to 10 titles per month per cardholder from a vast collection of audiobooks, eBooks, comics/graphic novels, movies, music, and TV shows.

Hoopla has no waitlists and offers a fantastic indie horror selection, which is an absolute delight that has allowed me to read and discover many books, authors, and publishers I might otherwise not have been able to access. Here are mini reviews of five I’ve enjoyed recently.

Five Mini Horror Reviews:

Wasps in the Ice Cream by Tim McGregor

A poignant and nostalgic coming-of-age tale with classic horror vibes. Captivating, immersive, and engrossing.

The Haunting of Willow Creek by Sara Crocoll Smith

A wonderfully sinister, delightfully macabre southern gothic rooted in creeping evil and ghoulish history. Atmospheric, gruesome, and unputdownable.

Mouth by Joshua Hull

A strange and entertaining story of a hungry hole and its former caretaker’s monstrous secrets. Wild, dark, and disturbing.

Participation Trophy by Ira Rat

An ’80s coming-of-age novelette steeped in nostalgia, mystery, and death. Unsettling, gory, and darkly funny.

Agony’s Lodestone by Laura Keating

A mind-bending account of grief and regret surrounding a mysterious disappearance. Sad, perplexing, and terrifying.
