Get to Know Me in Books📚

Favorite Book as a Child:

  • Horror Hotel!: A Book of Countless Terrors (Plot Your Own Horror Stories #4) by Hilary Milton

  • This is one of the first books I remember reading that was hugely gothic and ended very unhappily depending on which adventure you chose, and I was shocked, horrified, riveted, and immediately went back for more. Reading it now is just as creepy, disturbing, and fun as it was then.

Book That Got You Into the Genre You Love:

Here are five!

  • Horror Hotel! by Hilary Milton (See above.)

  • Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark by Alvin Schwartz: I remember seeing this book on a gift shop shelf on a childhood trip to Old Sturbridge Village with my family, and it was so creepy, macabre, and gross looking that I was instantly intrigued and had to have it. Some of the stories still haunt me.

  • The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson; “The Tell-Tale Heart” and “The Cask of Amontillado” by Edgar Allan Poe: These are some of the only stories I remember reading in school despite being an English major in college, where I did a ton of reading! They chilled and unsettled me so dramatically that I still feel those same emotions when I re-read them now, and they still rank among my favorites.

First Proper “Grown-up” Book:

  • I read loads of Nancy Drew and Fear Street books growing up; I’m not sure if these qualify as “grown-up,” but they’re chapter books, so I’ll go with yes.
