I have so many books on my TBR that I’m looking forward to reading that it often feels overwhelming, which is a great “problem” to have in the grand scheme of things (but a problem nonetheless!). Here are seven titles — the first two of which are forthcoming releases — that I’m chomping at the bit to read because of their gothic/horror-centric content and their gorgeous covers.

Seven Anticipated Horror Reads:

  • American Rapture by C.J. Leede: A hellscape-set story of a lust-inducing virus and a virginal Catholic girl attempting to reunite with her family. The frame-worthy cover on this one is absolutely spectacular, to say the least!

  • The Threshing Floor by Steph Nelson: A cult-focused tale surrounding a desperate single mom and her fight to save her young son, topped with a striking, yet understated cover (skulls + flowers always = a winning combination!).

  • Thirst by Marina Yuszczuk: A feminist gothic account of vampires, female agency, fear, desire, loneliness, and mortality that straddles multiple time periods and two women’s lives. The font, color scheme, and cover image combine to form a rich, eye-catching, and irresistible combination that guaranteed this one a spot on my shelves.
  • The Invisible Hotel by Yeji Y. Ham: A speculative gothic of a woman with strange dreams, a country in flux, and the importance and truth of cultural heritage. The colors and creepy image on this one make for a curious and tantalizing combination.
  • Myrrh by Polly Hall: A psychological horror novella of a woman’s inner goblin, a search for birth parents, and dark-secreted histories topped with another vivid cover that begs to be held, opened, and shelved!
  • Bad Dolls by Rachel Harrison: A short story collection that explores heartbreak, body image, hauntings, and female friendship bound with a bright, creepy cover that merited an overseas order!
  • The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories by Angela Carter: A classic collection of dark legend and fairy tale retellings that has haunted my bookshelves longer than I care to admit; an auto-buy based on its feminist gothic content and tattoo-inspired cover artwork.

What book covers (horror or otherwise) are you in love with right now?
