“Good people, as soon as their daughters know right from left, teach them one thing: That a girl’s reputation is like a cloth of pure white. The tiniest fleck of dirt — the tiniest fleck anywhere — and the whole thing is ruined.”

It’s only February, and Good People will, without a doubt, rank among my favorite reads this year. Following a family of refugees who come to Virginia from Afghanistan, the story unfolds via accounts from those within their orbit, forming a taut, propulsive, compelling, mysterious, and complex story of family, community, culture, and humanity. I binge-read the entire novel in two days, and it was riveting, highly impactful, thought-provoking, gut-wrenching, and devastating — utter perfection in print that digs into the essence of truth, perspective, speculation, bias, racism, gossip, and public vs. private lives.

Book That Came to Mind While Reading:

  • Good Girl by Aria Aber (which will also rank among my favorites this year)
