After reading a great book, one of my first thoughts is how and where to find read-alikes that fall into similar genres and styles. And so, to make that process easier for you, dear reader, I’ve included three previously reviewed books with corresponding read-alikes below.
- Prior Review: A House with Good Bones by T. Kingfisher
- Read-alike: Just Like Home by Sarah Gailey
In these compelling gothic horror novels, women return to their notorious childhood homes and attempt to figure out whether the creepy, strange, and menacing behavior of their mothers may be due to something supernatural. Both are atmospheric and suspenseful, provide unique takes on the haunted house, and involve unearthing long-buried secrets. A House with Good Bones employs some humor, while Just Like Home is darker.
- Prior Review: Chlorine by Jade Song
- Read-alike: Natural Beauty by Ling Ling Huang
These disturbing literary horror debuts surround the immigrant experience and involve Asian protagonists who sacrifice their bodies in the pursuit of perfection. Both women deal with racism and othering and possess innate, almost inhuman talents (swimming in Chlorine; piano-playing in Natural Beauty) and fall victim to societies with unrealistic expectations and individuals who view their bodies as a means to an end (swimming coach in Chlorine; teachers and employers in Natural Beauty). These novels are haunting, gripping, and involve body horror and loss of bodily autonomy. Chlorine employs magical realism, while Natural Beauty utilizes dark humor.
- Prior Review: Psycho by Robert Bloch
- Read-alike: Sundial by Catriona Ward
These engrossing psychological suspense/horror novels are haunting, creepy, and disturbing. They feature domestic drama, dysfunctional family dynamics, and toxic relationships (mother/daughter and husband/wife in Sundial; mother/son in Psycho); mothers who don’t like their children; offspring with dark tendencies; houses with chilling histories; shocking secrets/plot twists; and storylines that transition from psychological suspense into gothic horror.
Do you have any read-alikes for this trio that you'd recommend?
